FR Board, short for "Flame-Retardant Board", refers to a type of functional board that is specially processed or manufactured with flame-retardant materials to inhibit or delay combustion when exposed to fire. Its core characteristic lies in meeting specific fire safety standards—unlike ordinary boards that burn easily and spread flames rapidly, FR Boards can either resist ignition, self-extinguish after the fire source is removed, or slow down the spread of fire and the release of toxic smoke, thereby reducing fire hazards and providing more time for personnel evacuation and property protection.
Due to its inherent performance limitations, PP sheets are generally not used directly as the main fire-retardant panels for electrical equipment. Instead, they find more applications in scenarios with low fire-resistance requirements or for auxiliary protection. Their core applications and performance advantages need to be evaluated based on specific scenarios.
Applications
The application of PP sheets in electrical equipment must strictly comply with fire-resistance ratings (usually UL94 V2 or HB), and they are mainly used in non-core fire-protection areas, including:
Auxiliary panels for low-voltage electrical equipment: Such as internal partition panels of household circuit breaker boxes and cover plates of junction boxes (not the main housing). They only need to isolate minor electric arcs or sparks, with no risk of sustained high-temperature combustion.
Internal insulating liners for electrical equipment: Used inside power distribution cabinets and terminal boxes to isolate wires from metal casings, providing insulation and a slight fire buffer. They do not directly withstand external flames.
Housings for small electrical components: Such as housings/panels of low-voltage sensors and terminal blocks. The application environment has no open flames or high-temperature sources, and only basic flame retardancy (to prevent flame spread) is required.
Performance Advantage | Specific Performance & Value in Electrical Scenarios |
Basic Flame Retardancy | With the addition of flame retardants, it can meet UL94 V2 rating (self-extinguishes within 10 seconds in vertical burning tests, with no dripping that ignites underlying cotton). It can prevent small fires from spreading, satisfying the basic fire-resistance requirements of low-voltage equipment. |
Excellent Electrical Insulation | It has a volume resistivity of up to 10¹⁶Ω·cm and a low dielectric loss tangent (<0.001). Its insulation performance remains stable in humid or low-temperature environments, preventing electrical short circuits and meeting the needs of insulating liners and auxiliary panels. |
Chemical Resistance | Resistant to acids, alkalis, oils, and most coolants/cleaners commonly used in electrical equipment. It is not easily damaged by corrosion during long-term use, extending the service life of equipment (e.g., low-voltage electrical components in chemical environments). |
Lightweight & Easy Processability | With a density of only 0.9-0.91g/cm³, it is 10%-20% lighter than traditional fire-retardant plastics (e.g., ABS, PC). It can be quickly processed through cutting, welding, and bending, reducing the production and assembly costs of electrical equipment. |
Weather Resistance & Low Water Absorption | With a water absorption rate of <0.03%, it is not easily deformed by moisture or moldy during long-term use. It is suitable for outdoor low-voltage electrical boxes (with rainproof structures), preventing insulation performance degradation due to moisture. |
